The Competition
Six regional heats covering England and Wales took place during February and March this year. Each college was able to put forward two students, one college student and/or one apprentice, either level 2 or level 3. The test was designed by Bernard Collins of DCET Training and was not disclosed until the day of the competition. The test was based on level 2 studies. Each student that competed was provided with all the tools he/she needed to do the test and they were able to keep the tools at the end of the event. The final took place at SPARKS EXPO 2010 at Newbury Racecourse on 21st and 22nd April 2010. An all expenses paid trip was provided for all six finalists to Newbury Racecourse. Each finalist will receive national publicity in SPARKS Magazine along with a certificate of achievement for taking part.
Prizes
All six finalists received a stunning 4-piece drill set donated by Milwaukee and brand new Blaklader top quality workwear trousers, along with a number of gifts donated by industry manufacturers. The overall winner of the competition Scott Wigmore from Bridgwater College was awarded the title of ‘SPARKS UK Apprentice Electrican of the Year 2010’ and presented with his award by leading trade association NICEIC. In addition, Scott also received £1,000 worth of Electricfix vouchers and Bridgwater college was awarded £500 worth of Electricfix vouchers.
Each competitor took away with them OVER £80 WORTH OF ELECTRICIAN’S TOOLS. Tools have been donated by Electricfix, Wera Tools and Stabila. All the cable used throughout the competition was kindly donated by BASEC.
Entry requirements
If you are currently studying either the Level 2 or Level 3 NVQ course as an apprentice OR studying Level 2 or Level 3 City & Guilds at college then you can enter the SPARKS UK Apprentice Electrician of the Year competition.
